Wood Stair Railings

Custom wood stair railings, handrails and mixed-material banister systems for interior stairs, landings and overlooks. Roble Glass & Railings coordinates wood with glass and metal from its Vaughan showroom, serving Toronto, the GTA and selected Southern Ontario communities.

Warm Material, Custom Configuration

Custom Wood Railings for Stairs and Landings

Wood stair railings can range from a traditional banister with posts and balusters to a modern wood handrail paired with clear glass or metal infill. The result depends on the stair geometry, open edges, landings, connections and relationship with floors, trim and surrounding millwork.

We plan railing projects for renovations, replacements and new staircase installations. If you are still comparing glass, metal and other configurations, begin with our broader stair railings service.

Traditional to Contemporary

Wood Stair Railing Options

Wood can define the complete railing or introduce warmth as a handrail, cap, post or surrounding stair element within a mixed-material system.

01

Wood Handrails

A wall-mounted or guard-mounted wood handrail provides a graspable element that can coordinate with treads, flooring, trim and surrounding finishes.

02

Wood Banister Systems

Posts, handrails and balusters can form a traditional stair banister around flights, landings and open floor edges.

03

Wood and Glass Railings

Clear panels maintain open sightlines while wood handrails or caps add warmth and connect the railing visually with the staircase.

04

Wood and Metal Railings

Metal balusters, posts or structural elements can be combined with wood handrails and stair finishes for a balanced mixed-material design.

05

Modern Wood Railings

Simple profiles, clear glass and restrained connections can give wood stairs a contemporary appearance while retaining natural warmth.

06

Railing Replacement

An older railing can be reviewed for removal and replacement, including changes to posts, handrails, infill and transitions at floors and walls.

A Coordinated Stair and Railing Assembly

Wood, Glass, Hardware and Finish Planning

The visual selection is only one part of a wood railing project. Geometry, support, transitions and installation conditions influence the final result.

Species and Finish Are Confirmed Per Project

Wood appearance varies by species, grain, stain and clear finish. Available material and finishing options should be confirmed before they become part of the specification.

Glass Requires Coordinated Support

Panel layout, edges, handrails, channels and hardware must suit the stair geometry and supporting construction.

Transitions Need Early Attention

Stair flights, level landings, turns, walls and floor openings should connect without improvised gaps or awkward changes in handrail direction.

Requirements Depend on the Application

Planning should reference the current Ontario Building Code. Final requirements are determined by the project and authority having jurisdiction.

This content is general planning information, not engineering, permit or accessibility advice. Confirm applicable requirements for the property and municipality.

Designed Around the Staircase

Wood Stair and Railing Applications

Different layouts require different combinations of handrails, guards, infill and connections.

01

Closed-Riser Stairs

Wood railings and handrails coordinated with conventional treads, risers, walls and stringers.

02

Open-Riser Stairs

Transparent glass or slim metal details can preserve the open character of a modern wood staircase.

03

Landings and Overlooks

Level guards planned as a continuation of the sloped railing around upper floors and stair openings.

04

Basement Stairs

Railings designed around compact flights, walls, turns, headroom and transitions to the main level.

05

Stair Renovations

Existing wood stairs refreshed through new handrails, guards, glass or metal components and coordinated finish work.

06

New Custom Stairs

Railing decisions integrated with new stringers, treads, risers and landings from the design stage.

Both Adrian and Adolfo were amazing to work with. They listened to what our vision was and provided a solution. It was not an easy railing as we had to reinforce the floor but the end result is amazing. We went from a wood post white railing to a stunning glass railing that is not only functional but an "art piece". You must call them for your next project - they will bring the result your looking for - they did for us!

I recently hired Roble for some work around my home, and I couldn’t be more impressed with their service. From the moment they arrived, it was clear that they valued professionalism and attention to detail. Not only did they complete the work I requested efficiently and with great care, they also went above and beyond by tightening all the handrails, which wasn’t even part of the job. The team left everything spotless, and their friendly demeanor made the whole experience enjoyable. I highly recommend Adrian and his team for anyone looking for reliable, high-quality service!

I recently had the pleasure of working with Roble Glass and Railings for installing glass railings on our front porch, back porch, and balconies, and I couldn't be happier with the experience. From start to finish, their team was incredibly professional and attentive. They provided a comprehensive pre-project explanation, detailed drawings, and a virtual rendering, which greatly helped in visualizing the final outcome. Additionally, they offered competitive pricing compared to the three other quotes we received. They responded to my inquiries quickly and kept me informed throughout the process. The installation was smooth and efficient, and the results are nothing short of stunning. The quality of the work exceeded my expectations, and I highly recommend getting in contact with Adrian for anyone looking for top-notch glass railing solutions.

Roble Glass & Railings just completed a project in my home and I can't recommend them enough. From start to finish they were professional, good listeners and responsive. As we worked through the design phase for our small home, they were more than patient as I asked them for change after change until it was 'just so'. When it was time to instal, a full team arrived and completed the job in just a few hours! As our home is mid-reno, it's still unkempt, but they did a fairly good job of cleaning up afterwards. Thanks all!

It was an absolute pleasure working with Roble's professional team. As a general contractor, all we need is quality, timing, and professionalism, and I found all of these in this amazing team.
Adrian and the Roble Glass and Railings team provided exceptional service and craftsmanship. Their attention to detail and professionalism is admirable - in a nutshell, they cared about our project, which is hard to see these days with so many fly-by-night trades. Our mono-stringer stairs and glass railing were somewhat complicated, but the Roble Glass team did a fantastic job going through multiple design revisions to get it done right. Kudos to the team. The final result is stunning, and I highly recommend Roble Glass and Railings to anyone seeking meticulous quality, excellent service and flawless results. P.S. Adrian's referral for an unrelated trade turned out to be as good.

Frequently Asked Questions

Wood Stair Railing FAQs

Answers about cost, materials, glass and metal combinations, replacement and complete stair projects.

How much do wood stair railings cost?

Cost depends on the stair flights and landings, wood components, glass or metal infill, finish, custom fabrication, removal, installation conditions and site access. Photos and approximate measurements help prepare a project-specific quote.

What type of wood is best for stair railings?

The appropriate wood depends on desired grain and colour, surrounding stairs and flooring, intended finish, component profile and available material options. Roble should confirm the species and finish offered for each project before selection.

Can wood stair railings include glass panels?

Yes. Wood handrails or caps can be coordinated with clear safety glass, channels, posts or other hardware. Panel dimensions, exposed edges, support and transitions must suit the staircase and complete system.

Can wood and metal be used in the same railing?

Yes. Wood handrails and posts can be combined with metal balusters or structural details. Profile, colour, connections and finish should be selected together so the materials form a coherent assembly.

Can an old wood banister be replaced?

Often it can, but the existing railing, attachment points, stairs and adjacent flooring or trim must be reviewed. Removal may reveal areas requiring preparation before the new railing is installed.

Does this service include new stairs?

This page focuses on the railing and handrail. If the project also needs new stringers, treads, risers or a complete staircase, use our custom stairs service so both scopes can be planned together.

How long does a custom wood railing project take?

Timing depends on measurement, design and finish decisions, material preparation, coordination with related work and installation complexity. The schedule should account for the full process rather than installation alone.
